![]() I’m a cold-weather specialist and I love the brisk weather. Why do you travel to the Arctic in general? ![]() I will make milkshakes with peanut butter and fudge, but it can be a lot of stress just to eat enough. I need to gain as much weight as possible in order to not starve out there. I eat a mostly vegetarian diet, but I put butter on everything. If you’re not training, I doubt your commitment. I have to think of problems that we may encounter and how we can solve them. That ties into the last part of my training, the mental side. You can go crazy out there pulling for hours, but with training you just let your mind go. It’s super-boring, but it also preps me psychologically. This basically simulates the motions of pulling my sled. I walk around on the grass and snow on the shore of Lake Michigan and pull tires. The other part of my training is for endurance. I lose my pectoral muscles quickly as my body starts to burn calories more quickly in the cold. My body is not as forgiving as it was in the past, but I have changed my training to accommodate that. ![]() It’s really important to do a lot of core-strengthening multi-joint exercises to avoid injury. Our loads are going to be about 150 pounds. How do you train for a three-month journey? You never know exactly what is going to happen until you get on the ice, and I love that. You develop a special camaraderie that takes work and time to create. It goes beyond beauty and thrill, which fade. ![]() I like the long-term challenges you face and that you have to commit to it. ![]() I like expeditions because they challenge me in ways I like-to solve problems, work with people around the globe.
